Hundreds of retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) staged a protest in Abuja on Monday, shutting down the main gate of the Force Headquarters. The ex-officers demanded the removal of the police from the CPS, which they claim has subjected them to years of hardship.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who addressed the protesters, expressed empathy and acknowledged their plight, but clarified that decisions regarding the CPS lie beyond the authority of any Inspector-General. The protesters refused to disperse until a meeting was secured with police leadership.
